I have always thought this is a very sad photo. This is sometime very late in Mark's tour. He is a Spec 4 in this photo. He is very thin and has a short haircut. This is probably right after he went to Hawaii on R&R to visit my parents in June 1967. On the back of the photo he wrote "Take the stinking picture". Note that he is wearing his CIB. Mark was very proud of having earned the CIB. I think this is sad because this is not the same face as seen in the photos from earlier in his tour.

The 1st Platoon surprised a group of NVA. They went through the packs and Mark found this NVA "Boonie" hat. He mailed it home, but we lost it through the years. He also found an NVA hammock for sleeping. He liked the NVA hammock more than the hammock my dad mailed him in a "care package", so he gave away the one my father sent him and used the NVA hammock. He complained that his poncho was not long enough to cover him and the NVA hammock. He also said he mailed home a bayonet for an SKS that he got at this same time. He said in a letter home that this NVA hat and the bayonet had a "special meaning" to him and for my father to take care of them for him. I remember the hat arriving home and I can even remember wearing it, but I have no memory of the bayonet (spike), so it may have been lost in the mail.

The soldier in the right is Mark, he looks very thin. I was in contact with Bob Peek and he tells me the soldier on the left is SSG James Hafford. Bob Peek was he Supply Sgt for B Company 1/12th in 1966-67. Cliff Shaver wrote to me about this picture and he says "James Hafford, was my 2d Sqd Ldr thru Nov 66, reassigned as 1st Plt Sgt. At that time, you said Mark was with the 1st Plt, so that may be true. Hafford went on to OCS from Viet Nam and is now retired someplace in Washington State." I think this picture was taken in Dec66 or Jan67 after Mark was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge. Notice that SSG James Hafford on the left is wearing "Stateside" fatigues. I am not sure why?
